Defending Champion Ivy Stumbles Out of Gate

April 5, 2007

Bristol, Conn.--It may be good to be the king, but sometimes the throne gets awfully uncomfortable.

The Ivy Eagles, defending All-American Baseball League champions, started the season just 1-3. Ivy lost two games in a three-game series to Minnesota. The Golden Gophers finished ninth last year. Ivy then was hammered by previously winless Notre Dame.

"We have to realize last year is over," said Ivy manager Bob Seddon. "Hopefully, this bad stretch has our attention."

Meanwhile, Miami started the season by winning its first four games. The Hurricanes, last year's second-place finishers, swept Notre Dame in South Bend and then battered Minnesota in the Twin Cities 12-1.

"We're hungry; we want the pennant," said Miami right-hander Alex Fernandez who three-hit Notre Dame Monday afternoon. "Last year left a bad taste in our mouths."

Diamond Notes: Miami catcher Mike Piazza won the first Player of the Week award. Piazza was 7-for-16 (.438) with a home run and two RBIs . . . Piazza's emergence has put All-Star Jorge Fabergas on the bench. Last season, Piazza spent most of his time as the Hurricanes' designated hitter. That role is being split between Greg Vaughan and Orlando Gonzalez this season . . . Illinois pitcher John Ericks tossed a three-hit shutout in the Illini's season-opening win against Michigan . . . LSU first baseman Russ Johnson hit two home runs and drove in four as the Tigers bombed Mississippi State 8-3. Johnson (shown below) hit nine homers last season . . . Michigan put both Moses Fleetwood Walker and Leon Roberts on the disabled list. Both are still suffering from injuries incurred last year. Bill Freehan and Brian Simmons were called up from the minors to take their roster spots.
