USC's Boone Tabbed as West Player of the Week
Los Angeles--In a lineup of deadly hitters, Southern California's Aaron Boone is fast becoming one of the most feared.
Boone was lauded as the West Player of the Week. The Trojan second baseman hit a blistering .565 over the course of the last seven days to raise his West-leading average to .462.
"Aaron has been one of the league's hottest hitters since the All-Star break last year," said USC manager Rod Dedeaux. "He has made us stronger."
A year ago, USC led the AABL in virtually every offensive category. Through 10 games this season, the Trojans have struggled. USC is 18th in batting with a lowly .218 average. The Trojans are 12th in runs scored with 34.
"It's way too early in the year to panic," said Dedeaux. "Our bats will come around soon enough. In the meantime, opposing pitchers need to be careful with Aaron Boone."
Boone, who finished second to teammate Fred Lynn in batting last year with a .327 average, is 10-for-16 (.625) in road games (Boone is shown below).
Diamond Notes: First-place Arizona State is 3-0 on the road but just 4-3 at home . . . the Sun Devils led the AABL in batting (.294), home runs (12) and runs scored (57) . . . Texas left-hander Greg Swindell pitched a two-hitter against USC. Swindell walked none and struck out seven in his first career shutout . . . Jeffrey Hammonds of Stanford leads the West with five stolen bases. Hammonds had four steals all of last season . . . Cal reliever Chuck Cary has been placed on the disabled list with a torn biceps muscle. Cary, who appeared in 98 games last year, is expected to miss at least six weeks . . . Jackie Robinson of UCLA is off to a torrid start with a .436 average, three homers and nine RBIs.
Stat of the Week: Since starting the year 0-for-13, San Diego State's Tony Gwynn is 7-for-his last 15 at-bats.
