WWBU Monthly November 1903 - Marquee Bouts
22-11-1903 WWBU WW World Title, Packy McFarland (champ) v Vince Martinez
Packy McFarland (Champ, 21-3-0) makes his second Welterweight title defence against Vince Martinez (#5, 17-3-0). Most judges are wary of Martinez’s rankings as he has yet to defeat any fighters of note and carries two losses to Sid Barbarian on his record. Martinez is a boxer-puncher with no real power in either fist, as attested by his knockout rate of 4 stoppages in 17 victories. McFarland in contrast is in career best form and is expected by all experts to retain his crown comfortably.
The crowd was restless after the first two rounds of non action provided by these two fighters, with Martinez proving his shell is very hard to crack. The third saw McFarland find the chink in Martinez’s armour as he landed blows from all angles though Martinez was never in any real trouble. The fourth and fifth were once again more subdued with McFarland edging the advantage in each round. They would be the last competitive rounds. The sixth saw McFarland confuse Martinez with slick ring movement and clever feints, allowing him to land a staggering number of blows. The trend would continue in the seventh with the bout stunningly ended at the start of the eighth. After a minute of inaction, McFarland landed a thudding left hook had Martinez on floor and receiving the full count. McFarland retains his title impressively with the eighth round KO.
