FSU'S Perez Cycles His Way to East Player of the Week
April 26, 2007
Tallahassee, Fla.--Florida State third baseman Eduardo Perez enjoyed his finest week as a pro. On Monday, Perez hit for the cycle. By Sunday, he had been named All-American Baseball League East Player of the Week.
"I've been waiting for a week like this for a long time," said Perez, son of former Cincinnati Red great Tony Perez. "Everything fell into place this week."
Perez collected his cycle in a 10-8 victory over Michigan State. He got perhaps the most difficult hit out of the way by tripling off Spartan starter Mark Mulder in the first inning. In the third, Perez hit a solo home run off Mulder. An inning later Perez lined a bases-clearing, three-run double off reliever John Leister. An eighth-inning single off Larry Pashnick completed his cycle.
"To hit for the cycle was an exciting feat," said Perez. "Still, I'm glad we won the game."
Perez (shown below) drove in four runs on the day.. The last player to hit for the cycle was outfielder Pete Stanicek of Stanford on August 11, 2006.
Perez was selected for Player of the Week honors Sunday. By week's end, Perez had raised his average from .222 to .299.
Diamond Notes: Michigan right-hander Lary Sorensen pitched a two-hit shutout in a 1-0 win Saturday against hard-hitting Mississippi State . . . the Wolverines' Leon Roberts rejoined the team after a stint on the disabled list.
