1906 Amateur Player Draft

While the Winter Meetings lacked luster this year, the lead up to the Player Draft certainly didn't. There was a certain 18-year-old named Ty Cobb that had everyone buzzing during pre-draft workouts ... "He's going to make whichever franchise gets him," several scouts said ...

Cottonwood had the first pick and many thought the Monsoon would tab Cobb, but they went another direction. The first pick of the draft was pitcher "Colby Jack" Coombs, a 23-year-old right hander. Lake Havasu went next, and they too passed on Ty Cobb. When Cobb fell past the third pick (held by Payson), the Tucson Saguaros knew they possibly had the gem that could turn their lowly franchise around...

With the fourth selection of the 1906 amateur draft, the Tucson Saguaros select The Georgia Peach, 18-year-old phenom Ty Cobb... The three players picked ahead of Cobb could be in a trivia question one day (much like the question about who was picked ahead of Michael Jordan in the NBA)...
