For the sake of having it in the search-databse here I'll post what I did:
Since I hadn't changed any nicknames or team names or league abbreviations or anything like that, I had a hunch the problem was with one of the rookie players in the league. I opened the players.csv that was created by the import process in Excel, sorted by Pro years, and deleted everyone who didn't have 0.
Next I expanded the last name/first name/nickname fields to manually search for odd characters or lengths that might cause a problem. About halfway down I found it - apparently the game created a player with a first name of "Christopher" and a last name of "FenstermacherJChristopher" which apparently caused problems with the last name field in the master portion of the database. I changed his name ingame to Fenstermacher, and then checked his history and saw nothing but a draft entry so I also changed it in the draft log.
League imports fine now.
