1908 Cactus Champions Cup
The Cottonwood Monsoon defeats the Yuma Prisoners, 4-1
Alas, Yuma comes up short in its bid for a first-ever Cactus Champions Cup. Cottonwood, meanwhile, gets its first after coming up short in the Division Series a few times.
Cottonwood set the tone by winning the first two games in Yuma, a 3-1 decision and a 5-1 decision. The 'Soon got good pitching from
Jack Coombs and
Harry McIntyre.
The Prisoners bounced back to win the first game in Cottonwood, 5-4. Yuma scored three runs in the eighth to avoid a 3-0 deficit. But the Monsoon won the next two contests to close the series, 5-1 and 4-3. Coombs and McIntyre again were the pitching winners.
Yuma's
Addie Joss, the AZL's Top Hurler in both 1906 and 1907 (and will be again in '08 - a little preview for you) lost both of his decisions in the Cactus Cup. That moved his playoff record to an unsightly 1-3. Joss was 28-9 for the season...
