Untimely notifications

In my Oriental universe last night I encountered an odd problem. I was autoplaying through several days in succession in order to get to some scouting reports that were due. I was only advancing one day at a time, however. On the 25th of February I received notice that that there was a message for me. Checking my message board, I was informed that Spring Training was starting. I rushed to my pitching page to set up rotation, etc., and was puzzled to discover that five of my pitchers were fatigued. I finally decided that they must've been jet-lagged from the trip to Florida, shrugged and forgot about it until some hours later when I finally found where in the interface Spring Training was hiding.

When I got there, two things jumped out at me. First, that spring training had begun two days before I received notification, so I had two games played, and no wonder some of my pitchers were tired. It seems to me that a late notification isn't much better than no notice at all. I had no lineups set, had no chance to fill out my roster with minor leaguers, no rotation set.

The second problem is that the only thing the Spring Training page is the standings. The leaderboards and other stuff are all blank. I read in another thread recently that if you have statisticsset to minimum, this is a side effect. I set mine to minimum after reading horror stories on these boards about how much memory this game can consume. Also, I'm running on a machine that doesn't meet the minimum specifications for OOTP, so it runs very slowly, and I thought reducing the computations might speed it up. Is there any way for me to access the Spring Training stuff without monkeying with the level of statistics?
