Los Angeles--UCLA right fielder Ron Roenicke has always considered himself a slow starter. With two weeks gone in the 2008 season, Roenicke may need to reconsider things.

Roenicke, a career .255 hitter, has roared out of the gate. The 28-year-old leads the All-American Baseball League West with 19 RBIs. He ranks third in home runs, fourth in batting and fifth in runs scored.

"It's nice to get off to a start like this," said Roenicke. "It's great for me, and it's great for the team."

Roenicke won the West Player of the Week honors by batting .476 with three home runs and 15 RBIs in a seven-day span. Roenicke, who has four homers this season, has never hit more than six round-trippers in one season.

Meanwhile, UCLA has raced out to a 7-3 start. The Bruins find themselves in first place.

"First place would be a great home for us," said Roenicke (shown below).

Diamond Notes: Oklahoma State right-hander Allie Reynolds threw his fourth career shutout Sunday. Reynolds, who pitched the first no-hitter in AABL history two years ago, allowed just two hits in a 10-0 win over Cal . . . Two-time batting champion Fred Lynn broke an 0-for-18 string to open the season with his 100th career double. Unfortunately, Lynn then went hitless in his next 19 at-bats. The USC center fielder and last season's Golden Spikes Award winner is batting just .050 this year . . . Cal has lost four straight games, dropping its record to 2-8 . . . Jackie Robinson is off to the best start of his career. Robinson is second among West batting leaders with a .432 average . . . Gold Glove center fielder Oddibe McDowell of Arizona State missed two games with a pulled hamstring muscle.
