Prescott wins fourth Arizona League title, topping Nogales
The Antelopes had a relatively easy time notching their fourth AZL crown, rolling to a 4-1 series win over the Apaches.
Nogales fans will forever look back at Game One as the big turning point in the series. The Apaches had a 3-2 lead going into the top of the ninth, needing just three more outs from pitcher
Babe Adams to lock up the home victory. But then 2B
Amby McConnell — a Field General Award winner the year before — botched a routine grounder. Prescott scored the tying run, then shelled Adams for four runs in the top of the 10th to win going away, 7-3. OF
Danny Green had a big run-scoring double, then 1B
Tim Jordan pouned out a two-run triple.
From there, even though Nogales took Game Two by 3-0 score, things seemed to go downhill for the Apaches. Game Three was tied 0-0 going into the bottom of the ninth, with each pitcher throwing a two-hitter. Then Prescott's
Jimmy Walsh slammed a two-run, walkoff homer that sailed 410 feet. Nogales was effectively finished after that.
Prescott won Game Four 6-3, building a 5-0 lead in the early innings.
Tim Jordan had another big hit in this one, a two-run homer. In Game Five,
Happy Townsend pitched a three-hit gem, giving the Antelopes the title with a 2-0 triumph.
