Pioneers of the Diamond (POTD)

POTD is a 28-team fictional league that was created in March, 2003 real-time as an OOTP 5 league that paralled the release of OOTP 5. In fact, the web site creation and ownership recruiting began before OOTP 5 was released.

We started with the 2003 season with 24 teams and then expanded to 28 teams prior to the 2005 season. As of today, we've completed 16 seasons, and we're now currently in the offseason of 2019 (Opening Day 2019 will be held in about a week). We upgraded to OOTP 6 upon its release, and then we upgraded again to OOTP 6.5 upon its release. We are now using OOTP 6.51a, and unless something drastic happens, we'll be using 6.51a indefinitely in the future. Here is a breakdown of which seasons we used with different OOTP versions ...
  • POTD 2003-2006 was simmed with OOTP 5.
  • POTD 2007-2011 was simmed with OOTP 6.
  • POTD 2012-current is being simmed with OOTP 6.5 (now using 6.51a)
There's several reasons why we never converted over to 2006, namely ...

1) If it isn't broke, don't fix it! Our league has been peaking with overall activity during the 6.5 simmed seasons, and we haven't had a league opening in several seasons now. So long as this continues, there's no reason to convert to a newer version and risk losing part of the excellent ownership foundation we currently have.

2) There were reports of league file corruptions when other leagues proceeded with the conversion process from 6.5 to 2006. Whether this was due to commish errors in those leagues, bugs that have since been patched, or sheer bad luck, we did not want to risk going down that same path. Our league office and ownership group has spent far too much time on the league and individual teams to risk losing everything with an attempt to convert to a new version.

3) Too many reports of OOTP 2006 being too complex/non user-friendly as well as not being friendly toward online leagues. Shortly after its release, some league owners commented that they didn't even know how to play 2006 and that the complexity of the version intimidated them quite a bit. OOTP 6.5 is in-depth enough for everyone to thoroughly enjoy, but it's not so complex that it's difficult to learn while also being highly time consuming.

4) We've been using Catobase in our league, and Cato is an incredibly valuable tool, especially with a large league history of over 15 seasons now in our Cato history. One aspect our league strives to do is preserve the league's history - we have a Hall of Fame, for example - and Catobase is phenomenal for just that. If we converted to 2006, we'd be forced to sort of split our league's history with pre-2006 simmed seasons and then 2006 simmed seasons.
