My impression is that every time a new MAJOR league was added, it resulted in large numbers of players jumping contracts and allowing themselves to be poached by teams from the new league. This resulted in contract inflation and was usually the reason why, within a couple of years (in the case of the proposed Continental League, before it even got off the ground), an agreement would be reached to either stop poaching (AA, AL) or fold the new league and grant francises in the old league(s) to a few wealthy owners from the new league (Union, Federal, Continental).
