New Zealand's Tom Heeney, following on his unsuccessful bid today for the Empire title held by Angus Snyder, has announced his retirement from the ring. The popular Hard Rock from Down Under leaves the game with a laudable record, a tidy nest-egg and a very happy wife.
The Jersey Night-stick, Tony Galento, managed a sloppy win in his hometown last night over light-heavyweight Battling Siki. Desperately needing a win to salvage his fading career, Galento survived a knockdown in the first round to snatch a narrow points win over the talented Senegalese.
Big George Godfrey is likely finished as a viable contender off his stunning loss yesterday in Minneapolis to KO Christner. The end came in the 5th round when Godfrey picked himself off the canvas and was pummeled into submission on the ropes by the hard-punching Christner. This loss follows on the heels of the hammering he took from rising star Jersey Joe Walcott.
It seems more and more likely that Max Schmeling will abandon the EBU title as it seems he will be challenging for Phil Scott's World championship very soon. The European Boxing Union, meeting in Berlin, has ordered him to defend against one of the top three contenders before the end of next month. Meanwhile, Detroit's Joe Louis sits on the sidelines waiting for someone in the top ten to sign contracts to fight him.
