Contenders Avoid Tournament
New York - Managers of many of the world's top heavyweight boxing contenders are saying they are reluctant to sign up for any tournament not involving the top two men in the division. Herb Finegold, front man for Jersey Joe Walcott, says bluntly,"If Schmeling and Lenglet ain't in it, how legit can it be? We want assurances from the North American Boxing Commission that they will recognize the winner of a tournament in these United States of America as the real World Champion, no matter what those European shysters claim!" The head of the Commission was on a fact-finding mission in Nevada and was unavailable for comment.
