Fibonacci pretty well nailed it. It's also used as a way to bump up your post count. (My method is to type knowledgeably about topics upon which I am lamentably ignorant.)

I'm going to put it down to cabin fever. It's nearing the end of winter; it's nearing the release date. Tempers are getting short and some of us are getting silly. (Female baseball players are NOT silly.)

My advice is that the next time you see someone posting "7th!", just shake your head, pass them by and mutter, "There but for the grace of God go I."
