1917-Lightweights Part I

1917 LW Title Bouts

WBA

Benny Leonard CH (26-0-1) vs Louis de Ponthieu #9 (19-3-1)

Leonard travels to London to take on de Ponthieu, who has struggled with just one win in his past four bouts, so not much of a challenge is expected.

After a cautious start by both, Leonard begins dictating the action from the outside. de Ponthieu moves inside and tries to be more aggressive, but Benny keeps popping the jab and beating him to the punch. dePonthieu perseveres and has his best round in the fifth when Leonard is unable to connect on the inside. It's back to the outside for the Ghetto Wizard, who adds to his points lead, frustrating the challenger. de Ponthieu is able to score with a big hook near the end of round eight. A cut appears above the right eye of the Frenchman in round 10, and then a second cut is opened above the left eye two rounds later. A cross by Leonard in the final round finishes the game challenger for good. Leonard by KO 15.

Benny Leonard CH (27-0-1) vs Fighting Dick Hyland #4 (35-21-5)

Leonard takes on the veteran Canadian in his fourth title defense. It is Hyland's third shot at the WBA belt, having lost twice to Blackburn.

After a close initial round, the Ghetto Wizard sets up shop on the outside and begins to dominate the bout. Leonard also looks strong in the third and fourth rounds, but Hyland does well to take round five and keep the bout close. Both move inside in round 6, but Leonard lands repeatedly, and Hyland shows signs of swelling around his right eye. Hyland retreats to the outside in round 7, and the swelling worsens as Leonard is repeatedly on target. Near the end of round 8, Leonard nails Hyland with an uppercut and the other eye starts to swell. Round nine, Leonard connects with a cross and Hyland is in trouble. The end comes a round later when all the accumulated punishment forces the ref to call a halt. Leonard by TKO 10.

Benny Leonard CH (28-0-1) vs Rocky Kansas #10 (21-4-2)

Kansas, a top young LW, has been unbeaten in all of 1916-17 with five wins and two draws, thus earning his first title shot.

Leonard starts well, working from the outside, while Kansas appears overly cautious. Kansas gradually gets more aggressive, but is troubled by some swelling around his left eye by the end of the fourth stanza. Kansas bounces back to have a strong round 5, but then Leonard gets serious, scoring big in round 6 and following up with some devastating punches on the inside that cause Kansas to be cut above the right eye, with Leonard inflicting additional punishment to lead to another stoppage win. Leonard by TKO 7.

NABF: Blackburn defended four times in 1917, first versus Hyland, who fought well and held the Champ to a draw. Then it was Young Tommy Coleman's turn, and a KD in round 9 punctuated a lopsided UD win for Blackburn. Another UD win followed versus Ad Wolgast, who offered little resistance. Finally, Lew Tendler made the bout competitive but once again Blackburn managed to eke out a narrow UD win.

USBA: Knockout Brown defended the title versus ex-Champ Willie Ritchie, but a cut early in the bout led to a stoppage -- the cut being caused by an accidental butt, and Ritchie lifted the belt via a narrow technical decision in round 5. Ritchie then defended versus Richie Mitchell, where he held off a surging Mitchell in the late rounds after piling up an early lead. Ritchie by SD 12 (116-111, 112-117, 115-113).

CBU: Driscoll, the GBU titleholder, took on Welsh, the CBU champ in a unification title bout in October. Driscoll but Welsh down in the fifth and registered a solid UD 12 win. In December, he pounded out Fighting Dick Hyland in 6 rounds, winning by a TKO stoppage.

GBU: Welsh took on upstart Llew Edwards, putting both his EBU and GBU titles on the line. Turned out to be an ill-advised move, as Edwards floored Welsh in round one and went on to dominate the bout with a strong UD win featuring five KDs of the soon-to-be ex-Champ. Edwards was not so fortunate when he faced Driscoll late in the year, with Driscoll scoring a KD in the first en route to a UD 12 win. Driscoll put the belt up against Welsh in the Oct. 1917 bout (see CBU results).

EBU: Welsh lost the bout, one of the three he held going into the year, when facing Edwards early in the year. Edwards has yet to defend.
