For any in-season FA and extensions, the GM's can export them so I leave that up to them.

For the FA period, I handle it like this:

1) Sim from end of playoffs up until Rule 5 draft. Players file for FA during this time, but teams can't make offers because they haven't had a chance to export.

2) Run 5, 3 day sims in the course of a week. 3 days at a time is a good mix between advancing through FA and giving teams the chance to bid for certain players. Some players decide quickly, others take their time.

3) Run normal 7 day sims until we hit Jan 1st in game (usually 2 sims)

4) Run 21 day sims until the start of Spring Training

I've found that most of the major league level players are signed during steps 2 and 3. Teams can then use the time from Jan 1 to Spring Training to fill out their minor leagues, if necessary. I also publish the draft during this time.
