That's how things are usually scheduled, although there are occasional 2 and 4 game series, as well. Back in the old days, the Pacific Coast League used to schedule 7-game series on 6 days: 1 game each day Monday through Friday and 2 games (a "doubleheader", which has pretty much gone the way of the dinosaur) on Saturdays. On Sundays, the teams would travel to their next series. On the bright side, the west coast has a much warmer climate, and they could play 200+ game seasons.
And, yes, it can get expensive, but people rarely attend every game - season ticket sales only account for a percentage of sales, and many of those are bought by businesses.
