I've always thought it would be kind of cool to have a league where each franchise cost a certain amount. For example, you'd purchase the Yankees for $100, the Redsox for $95, the Mets for $94, etc ... the Brewers for $35 (or something). Each owner would then have the opportunity to pay up to $10 into the game for a cash balance on hand to sign free agents, etc...

So if you purchased the Yankees, you'd buy them for $100 plus you could pay up to $10 more to increase your amount of cash. If the financials were balanced right it would be difficult for teams to make a profit. The $ used to purchase the franchises would then work as the $ in the league. So each year you could make a little bit of your money back (if you were fiscally responsible). In the end you could (if there were enough interested players) sell your franchise back to the league for its present value or to a new owner.

This would make long-term contracts for free agents a whole new ball game. It be more difficult, at least for me, to guarantee a 32 year old LF $7.50 per season for 7 seasons than $7.5M fake dollars in a league that I'll just dump if I get sick of it.

A concept like this would probably be better done if you had 10-16 friends that you knew pretty well that liked the game.

Anyway, there are a lot of problems with the idea, but I've always thought it'd be interesting.
