To muddy the waters slightly, according to Retrosheet, up until 1883, it wasn't winning percentage or games behind which determined the champion, but rather the
number of wins.
Here's how the actual 1872 NA final standings look as a result:
Code:
G W L T PCT GB
Boston Red Stockings 48 39 8 1 .830 -
Baltimore Canaries 58 35 19 4 .648 7.5
New York Mutuals 56 34 20 2 .630 8.5
Philadelphia Athletics 47 30 14 3 .682 7.5
Troy Haymakers 25 15 10 0 .600 13.0
Brooklyn Atlantics 37 9 28 0 .243 25.0
Cleveland Forest Citys 22 6 16 0 .273 20.5
Middletown Mansfields 24 5 19 0 .208 22.5
Brooklyn Eckfords 29 3 26 0 .103 27.0
Washington Olympics 9 2 7 0 .222 18.0
Washington Nationals 11 0 11 0 .000 21.0
The Philadelphia Athletics, who by modern standards would be considered the second place team, are the fourth place team due to having the fourth highest number of wins.
