Created Player Profiles - 1874

CLIFFORD 'SCOT' CAMPBELL

Campbell had a truly breakout season in 1874, winning the NA's top bat award with a .389 batting average for the Philadelphia White Stockings. After a horrid season in 1872 and an average one in 1873, it looks like "Scot" is ready to break out.

WALKER 'BOOK' RHOADES

Rhoades had a workman-like campaign in 1874, going out to the pitcher's box for each Philadelphia Athletics' contest and pitching well enough to give his team a chance to win. Unfortunately for 'Book' the team surrounding him wasn't all that good, so he went only 29-28 despite a 2.50 ERA and 189 Ks in 496 innings.

CAVETANO BLANCO

Blanco had established himself as one of the best arms in the Association during his first years in the NA, so his performance in 1874 can only be described as disappointing. After posting an excellent 1.95 ERA in '73, he came back with a mediocre 3.71 mark in '74. His won-loss mark was 25-24 and he was one of the big reasons the Philadelphia White Stockings stumbled in 1874.

ARTURO VILLANUEVA

Villanueva bounced back from a disappointing 1873 with a decent, though not spectacular, effort in 1874. His average climbed to a career-best .286 and he legged out nine triples. He continues to sparkle defensively, which will help keep him in the Philadelphia White Stocking lineup - at least until the rumored Cuban league opens, in which case it's likely he'll return to his homeland - and bring Cavetano Blanco along with him.

MIKE 'THE HITMAN' FELDBUSH

Feldbush was not signed by any team in 1874 and spent the season out of the game. With several new teams starting play in 1875, it is expected that he'll land a job somewhere.

JOHN MAHONEY

Mahoney cemented a place in the Canaries lineup this season at third base after bouncing around - and sitting a good amount - during his rookie campaign in 1873. He rewarded the club's trust with a .322 average and decent play in the field. Since he is very young and shows good talent, it's expected that his level of play will continue to rise.

JIM MCGREGOR

A promising young shortstop from Canada, McGregor was quickly signed at age 17 by the reborn Chicago White Stockings... and then put on the bench to watch & learn. He appeared in ten contests, most of them as a defensive replacement and had just two at-bats this season, with no hits. He'll probably see more time in 1875, though that depends on how his development progresses, since he is likely several years away from being a regular.
