RED SOX POUND ATHLETICS 10-3
Carl Mays (21-9, 2.74) allowed just 7 hits on the mound and chipped in with 3 at the plate as the Boston Red Sox hammered Philadelphia 10-3. Tris Speaker (.333,3,83) also had 3 hits for the Red Sox while fellow outfielder Harry Hooper (.321,15,121) drove in 3 runs. The win lowers the Red Sox magic number for clinching at least a tie for the American League pennant to 1.
In the National League Pittsburgh lost 7-4 at home to St Louis allowing the idle New York Giants to creep to within 1 game of the first place Bucs.
