I would say that we hit the ball pretty well this year. We had some big power numbers, but also struck out at a good rate. I am pretty happy with the Lee trade, and I expect Rivera and Mathis to pick up their production rate next season for us. I am hoping to maybe make a few changes in this area of the team, for a defensive benefit and maybe a batting average/stolen base benefit. One thing I am always going to be sure to have in a play is a guy who is going to get on base at a good rate. I am not a full fledged money baller, like Billy Beane of the A's is (i.e. no stolen bases allowed, can K a lot, etc.), but I do like to have some power hitters on the team, and I think we definitely have plenty of that in our nucleus of players. I see Weeks serving as a capable lead-off hitter for a while, Aybar will probably move into the two hole, Fielder will bat third, and from there we will have to see where we put guys. I may also put Gwynn Jr. in the two-hole to see how he does there against righties or something like that. I am looking forward to seeing what Juan Rivera can do for us in a full season, but we do have quite a few outfielders that could start, in Hart, Jenkins, Gwynn, Rivera, and Figgins (if he is out there again next season).

We are going to need to do some work here, specifically in the bullpen. I don't have much of a problem with Turnbow at closer, but I want to find a full fledged set up man that will make any lead after seven virtually impossible to come back on, and I don't think we've got that guy yet. Shields could possibly be it, but at some points he got a bit wild for us and seems better suited to be the first middle relief guy out of the pen when we have a lead (more of a seventh inning guy). I think that Ben Hendrickson could some day possibly be a closer, but his struggles this year show that he needs some polishing before he steps anywhere near that role. I like Kiko Calero as a guy to call out of the pen when we are trailing by a few runs in the later innings, and he can also go more than one inning which is always nice. Robert Hinton did real well when he came up to the bigs, and he could possibly take Dan Kolb's spot next season in the pen, as Kolb is going to leave for free agency this offseason. With all of that being said, we are missing one set up man type of guy for next year's pen, and that will definitely be a need going into the offseason. I am looking forward to next year's rotation with Villy, Jackson, and Gallardo all being a part of it. I am going to have to choose two of either Sheets, Bush, or Blanton for the other two spots.

One spot that I didn't really update on a lot that might play more of an impact on this year's game is the financial aspect of the team. I am going to give you a basic overview of where we are at the end of the first season that I am here as GM.

Jay's Thoughts: All in all, I suppose it was a pretty successful season, and I think our experience ended up hurting us as it progressed. The guys that I really want to build this team around are up, and we even have a few extra guys to work with to fill some spots we need help in. Next year I am going to give you our goals before the season starts, and I can tell you right now that it is going to be to get to the playoffs. I think we have a team that if we can just add a little bit of pitching and defense, it will thrive on its hitting. On to the offseason!
