A couple months ago I proposed a historical league starting in 1989 (the year Ken Griffey Jr came into the league and the start of my baseball card collecting). In addittion to a lot of other ideas I had, I wanted to charge some obscenely low amount, like 3.00 per team per season to weed out the lamest of the lame owners.
It's funny but the majority of my PM's were "Wow man, love the idea but I don't have the 3.00. Can I still join?"
I don't think the season fee has to be very big, somewhere around 5.00 or even lower, to drive the riff raff out of the league. I play at whatifsports and pay their ridiculous season fees because it is better competition than free sites and free leagues, plain and simple. There are exceptions to the rule of course, but generally speaking if you get 20 guys to pony up 5.00 each with the money going to buy a trophy or plaque for the WS winner and maybe a smaller one for the WS loser, you are going to keep people more interested than they otherwise would be.
To clarify, I wouldn't want to be in a league where the proceeds were paying for the commissioner's Friday night bar hopping. But I'd be EXTREMELY interested in a league that required either a deposit or a season fee which was used to reward the best teams in the league. The only problem I forsaw was collusion. When you start making something worth cheating at, people will cheat unfortunately. That's why I wanted to make the buy in relatively inexpensive.
