May be a bit of a wild swinger. Booked vs. Roberts. Good defensively. Matched vs. Roberts for title. Roberts badly out of condidtion. Pierce works his body mercilessly. Roberts didn't train, was over confident and lacked stamina. Roberts dropped several times in 4th, right eye is closed and a rib is cracked. In 10 Roberts has a final flurry. split's Pierce's nose. In 11th Murphy saves the Kid from being KO'd by jumping into the ring for a DQ loss. Takes title from Roberts.

Jack "killer" Enright
HW New Orleans 200 lbs A slugger, somewhat clumsy. Dirty scrapper. challenger. Sensational newcomer winning fights quickly. Fought Marty McCabe, a boxer, scheduled 20 winner to get a title fight vs. Roberts.
Early on Enright uses laces on McCabe. McCabe left shuts one of Enright's eyes. Mcabe got confident and came inside working the body well. A tremendous rigth uppercut sags McCabe to his knees and Enright kills him with a rabbit punch to back of neck the ref doesn't see. Opponent in Roberts' first defense. Roberts 12 lbs overweight. Enright takes 1st 3 rounds. 4th Roberts rushes, is hit in head and trades with a stronger puncher.5th tame. 6th Roberts comes out swarming, drops Enigth who bounces back up stunned, dropped for a 4 count and poleaxed again but saved by bell. Roberts out of shape can go 2 more rounds, Enright ko'din 7th. Goes to Buffalo for a "soft" bout vs. nobody Knockout Pierce and is KO'd by a right at 1:30 of 1st.

Young Abel Hamilton
HW outboxes Dynamite Jackson & Knockout Burns. An actor in Cuthbert Van Dyke's film "The Knockout" co-stars as The English Camp. Was an amateur HW champ of the coast for 2 yrs before going into pictures. An intelligent fighter. Never stopped as an amateur. Always in condition. Stinging tw0-fisted puncher, good feinter, moves well. Drops Knockout Burns in workout and outboxes Dynamite Jackson. Serious during fight scene with KId Roberts filmed in West Coast AC. Ties to show up the Kid. Opens a cut over the Kid's eye. Gets KO'd.

The Champ
HW 215 Unnamed in novel, but obviously based on Jack dempsey. Turns down offers to fight Roberts. Has had 1 bout in 2 years. In Hollywood making films: From Dockyards to champion & Up From the Gutter and Halfways Back. Will fight the Kid if he beats Caputo. Signs to fight the Kid after Roberts-Jackson. Title Bout 1st round champ is cut over right eye, but he drops the kid for 5 with a right to jaw and left to body before the bell. 2nd Cahmp comes out to end the bout. 3 shots to head and then he begins to work the body until staggered by an uppercut to the body and a left to mouth. Champ retaliates with a couple of low shots. Kid drops the champ with a rigth to ribs followed by a rigth to the jaw. 9 count. The kid is distracted and clocked in turn by the champ. 3rd. Champ figures to end it but is dropped for 8 by a right and for 9 by another right to chin. Champ beats count but falls swinging and is out.

Henri Gournet
HW 216 lbs. French champ. Fights Kid Roberts in Monte Carlo. A boxer not a slugger. Carries fight at long range, content to outpoint opponents. Foul fighter. Ist late in round Kid sags Gournet's knees with a body shot. Moving in for a finish Gournet's feeble left to the face shocks the kid. oil of mustard on his gloves. 2nd Kid can't see and is floored often. After a ring accident the kid apologizes in French surprising Gournet who is clocked before he can recover.
