WBC Title Fight

Champion “Iron” Mike Tyson, USA, 17-1-1 (16) vs. #30 Evander “The Real Deal” Holyfield, USA, 15-2-1 (15)

Tyson - Holyfield III. Holyfield is the only man to beat the WBC Champion, “Iron” Mike Tyson. Holyfield punished Tyson in their 1st fight and won by TKO11. Their 2nd fight ended prematurely as an accidental head butt halted the bout in the 1st and was declared a technical draw. The buildup for this fight has been volcanic. It looks like the Grammy and MTV awards out in the audience here at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. So many famous faces, athletes, singers, actors and former boxing greats here to watch the spectacle. This could well be the largest pay-per-view event in modern sports history. The music starts to play, “Welcome to the Jungle,” by Guns n Roses and out comes Evander Holyfield with his trainer, Emanuel Stewart. And now here comes the WBC Champ, “Iron” Mike Tyson with “I’m Bad,” by LL Cool J. Dressed in his traditional black trunks, no socks and white towel cover, Tyson is accompanied by his trainer Cus D’Amato. Tyson lands the first punch of the fight, Holyfield counters. Tyson looks better than I have seen him in a long time. The champ finishes the 1st outworking his opponent. Holyfield lands early but Tyson is closing the gap and fighting on the inside. Both fighters are throwing punches with bad intentions. Tyson takes the 2nd, 19-9. The 3rd is a close round with the action slowing down a bit. Emanuel Stewart is trying to get Holyfield to circle to the right after landing the jab. Whatever Stewart told Evander worked because he won that round easily outscoring the champ 26-4. Tyson looked hurt early but Holyfield was unable to take advantage. Tyson lands, then Holyfield, Tyson, Holyfield…oh man, the sweat is flying off their heads and is landing on everybody in the press and front rows! Tyson is going to work and Holyfield is hurt by a crushing uppercut. Holyfield is in trouble, wait, Holyfield lands several punches. Tyson started the round 27-3 but Evander came back and scored 15-4. We are getting our money’s worth but can both of these fighters continue dishing out and absorbing such punishment? Who is in better condition, who has the bigger heart? Holyfield’s right eye is starting to swell shut. Tyson lands some wicked shots and Referee Corona is looking carefully at Holyfield. But I don’t know why, because “The Real Deal” always seems to respond and continually punches himself back into the round with late rallies. Tyson sprints out of his corner in the 8th and lands a hard right hook, followed by a straight left. Holyfield’s mouthpiece lands in Paris Hilton’s lap (better get a new mouthpiece, dont know what you can catch from that one), and Corona steps in to finally stop the fight. Holyfield is receiving too much punishment without responding. Tyson retains his WBC title by (TKO8) at the 2:57 mark. Cards at stoppage: 68-65, 68-65, 68-66 all in favor of Tyson.
