Tough debut for Chavez...

Julio Cesar Chavez, Mexico, Pro Debut vs. Jose Carrillo, Mexico, Pro Debut

ESPN, is proud to present the debut of what many consider to be one of the greatest Mexican amateurs of all-time, Julio Cesar Chavez. Chavez amassed an amazing record of 108-6-2 (87) in the amateurs and was quickly signed to a pro contract by Aztec Promotions when he decided to fight under the bright lights. Teddy Atlas, Brian Kenny and Joe T. are here to get a first-hand glimpse of a fast growing national hero. It will be interesting to see how Chavez does under all of this scrutiny, especially since another national hero, Erik Morales, just came off a marvelous performance in his debut the other night. Chavez is moving around the ring and lands a two-punch combo followed by a violent body shot that sends Carrillo down at the midway point of the 1st. Carrillo goes down for the second time in the round but manages to get up in time to survive the round. Chavez lands a volley of punches but Carrillo counters and make the round close. Carrillo is trapped in the corner and Chavez unleashes a flurry of punches, 25-5. Both boxers have swelling around their eyes. Chavez has been warned for punching below the belt and holding behind the neck. I have Carrillo winning the 4th, his first round. Round 5 and Chavez shows his experience by controlling the pace and flow of the fight. Chavez is picking his shots, using angles and circling around to the right to avoid Carrillo’s right hand. Round 6 is action-packed as both fighters exchange volleys. Both fighters have some swelling, Carrillo’s left eye is nearly shut, while Chavez is having problems with both eyes. The ref is looking closely at Carrillo as Chavez lands, 28-2. I am surprised that Carrillo survived the round. Carrillo is definitely a much better fighter than advertised ( “1” ranking). The 9th is another Chavez round but the ref has issued a second warning to Chavez for low blows. Chavez doubles up on his jab and lands a nice hook that sends Carrillo down to the canvas. Carrillo is up at six but goes down again with :2 seconds left in the round. Amazingly, Carrillo gets up, wants to continue, and is allowed to. I don’t think Carrillo has recovered from the knockdowns he suffered in the last round. Carrillo is unable to avoid any of the punches and is not throwing any of his own. The referee finally steps in and mercifully ends the fight. Julio Cesar Chavez is victorious in his debut with a (TKO10). Chavez landed 36.4% - 13%.
