IBF Championship - A New Champ is Crowned
IBF Title Fight
Champion Rocky Marciano, USA, 21-2-0 (20) vs #8 Muhammad Ali, USA, 19-3-0 (16)
Marciano/Ali II. The power of the champ versus the speed of the challenger. Ali comes out on his toes and effectively sticks and moves in the 1st. Marciano cuts off the ring and goes to the body to try to slow down Ali later in the fight. The champ lands a three-punch combo and hurts Ali. Marciano is warned for a low blow that seems to have upset and inspired Ali here in the 3rd as he outworks the champ 26-9. Ali lands a hard cross to begin the 4th but Marciano counters with a sharp, clean combo that drops Ali. Ali is able to finish the round but suffered some swelling around the left eye. Ali responds by using his footwork and quickness to take the next two rounds. Ali outboxes the champ, 14-0 in the 7th and 14-0 again in the 8th. Marciano finally shows up again and lands some hard blows to take the 9th. Marciano has been warned for three different fouls entering the 10th, the last being pushing down the neck at the end of the 9th. Marciano needs to be careful or he may receive a point reduction that could become costly. Ali definitely looks like the fresher fighter here in the 10th and is imposing his will on the champ. Ali is on his bike and is shooting the jab straight down the middle while avoiding any punishment from the champ. Marciano lands a crushing hook and outworks Ali, 15-6, in the 11th. Ali is cut in the 12th as Marciano goes to work, 25-10. The champ seems to be getting stronger, he may know that he needs to really put some work in these last rounds to win the fight. Ali’s punches don’t seem to have much steam in them but he is outworking and scoring points in the judges eyes, 17-4, here in the 13th. Marciano is down in the 14th at the 1:46 mark! The champ is up but is taking severe punishment and the fight is stopped at the 2:47 mark, Ali landing 32-4. The winner and new IBF Champion, Muhammad Ali by (TKO14). Cards: 123-123, 124-122 Ali, 124-122 Ali. Punch stats: 66.6% - 23.4% Ali. (I had Ali ahead by more than the judges as the punch accuracy shows)
