COLLEGE HOOP NOTES: Sam Hightower, who led San Francisco to the National Championship a year ago, is considered to be one of the front-runners for the Norton Award. Other's in contention for College Basketball's Player of the Year award are Brian Hawkins of USC, Dwayne Taylor of Maryland, Kentucky's Marcel Jones and Michael McMaster of Texas A&M.

Bradley suffered it's first loss of the season when the Braves were beaten by the Missouri Valley Conference rivals at Oklahoma A&M. The Cowboys won the game 81-55 and are ranked 4th in the nation while Bradley slips to 12th.

It is not business as usual at North Carolina. After a pair of NCAA titles in 1917 and 1918 followed up by a perfect regular season a year ago the Tar Heels find themselves just 10-4 to start the season. Virtually any other school in the country would be happy with 10-4 but North Carolina is not any other school. The Tar Heels lost their season opener at UCLA 59-39 and followed that up with a loss in the championship game of the Alaska Classic, losing 73-66 to then-unbeaten Bradley. While both Bradley and UCLA were top 10 teams at the time of the meetings, it was losses to unranked VMI and #19 Mississippi that really show North Carolina is struggling. The Tar Heels did rebound from those two straight losses to beat Miami 72-44 in their conference opener.
