ICBA Championship
ICBA Title Fight
[Champion] Larry Foley, Australia, 13-0-0 (7) vs. [6/146] Ruslan Chagaev, Uzbekistan, 15-3-0 (13)
ICBA Champion, Larry Foley steps back into the ring only one month after dethroning Ike Ibeabuchi to make his 1st title defense. This will be Chagaev’s second opportunity at the ICBA Title, losing previously to South Africa’s, Mustafa Couzee in April 1951. Both fighters square off and the fireworks are under way. Round 1 has a lot of action as each fighter lands good leather. Chagaev staggers Foley at the beginning of the round but Foley responds with some hard shots of his own to keep the round close. Chagaev is getting off first in all the rounds but Foley keeps coming back with counters. Same pattern in the third. Chagaev keeps pressing the action and the champ keeps moving and countering. It will be interesting to see how the judges will score these rounds. I don’t believe you can win a fight by running but I will say that Foley is landing punches while trying to stay away from the constant swarming. The champ has a very good 5th, 15-8. Foley really goes to work in the 7th, 29-5, with jabs and combos raining down on Chagaev. Foley is really coming on strong while Chagaev looks gassed. Chagaev also has swelling around the right eye. The champ is really dominating this fight right now. “Happy” Larry is showing his opponent all the skills of a polished boxer with his footwork, movement, feints, slipping punches, countering punches. 21-0 in round 13. Chagaev will need a knockout to win this fight but has no energy left to throw any punches with harmful intentions. Chagaev is down in the 14th but manages to scramble and get up. The ref is looking closely and Chagaev isn’t throwing any punches, so the fight is stopped at the 2:47 mark of the 14th round.

Cards: 126-122, 127-120, 125-124 all in favor of Foley.
