MORE DEALS FOR THE REDS

The Cincinnati Reds continued a busy offseason by making a move today to shore up their pitching staff. Cincinnati dealt veteran first baseman Ed Konetchy (.263,3,34) to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for 30 year old pitcher Bob Shawkey. Shawkey was 11-15 for the Phillies a year ago and is 47-50 in his 5 year major league career.

There is certainly a spot for Shawkey in the Reds rotation after Cincinnati dealt starting pitchers Dolf Luque and Hod Eller in November. Eller and Luque combined to win 31 games last season for Cincinnati. Konetchy was expendable because the Reds added first baseman Ray Grimes from the Red Sox in the Eller deal.

Here is the complete 1921 PGA Tour season. Assuming I get the courses created in time all three majors will be played in the same venue as they were in real life. For 1921 the British Open goes to St. Andrews for the 12th time. St. Andrews most recently held the Open in 1910 when James Braid won

The 25th United States Open will be held in June at the Columbia Country Club in Maryland. The 4th PGA Championship will take place in October at Inwood in New York. With The Masters not debuting until 1934 there are only 3 majors but the Western Open is sometimes considered the 'unofficial' fourth major during this time period. This year's Western Open will be held at the end of August in Cleveland with the Oakwood Golf Club acting as the host course.

ANOTHER DQ WIN FOR LIGHTHEAVY TITLE

For the third bout in a row the World Lightheavyweight championship was decided by a disqualification. This time the defending champ, Fay Kaiser, hung on to the belt when Kid Norfolk was disqualified in the 12th round for repeated low blows. It marked the second DQ for Norfolk in less than a year as he lost the title due to fouls against Mike McTigue in August. McTigue would then be disqualified in his first defense against Kaiser.

Norfolk is considered to be far and away the best fighter in the division and he had full control of this bout at the time of his ejection. Kaiser improves to 31-4-2 with the win while Norfolk falls to 35-3-1.

DEMPSEY SCORES TKO WIN OVER MCVEY

World Heavyweight Champion Jack Dempsey improved to 39-1 with a 10th round TKO of Sam McVey in their title fight. The win is the second straight title defense for the 25 year old champ since he regained his crown last summer with a win over Harry Wills. The veteran McVey sees his record drop to 70-12-3. It was the fourth time in his career the 36 year McVey has been given a title shot but he has come up short on all 4 occassions.

Next up for Dempsey will be an April bout in Edmonton against Canadian Heavyweight champion George Christian.

O'DOWD RECLAIMS MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE

Mike O'Dowd is once again World Middleweight Champion after the 26 year old Minnesota native scored an unanimous decision over Jeff Smith in Chicago. O'Dowd carried the fight to the champion and improved his record to 33-41. Smith drops to 40-7-1. The New York City native was making his 4th title defense.

O'Dowd briefly held the title in 1919 before losing in an upset to Silent Martin, who would in turn lose to Smith in his first title defense.
