Blackstone, Cornell Preseason Pennant Race Picks

Pontiac, Ill.--SION has predicted the Blackstone Bears will win the 1946 Livingston County League title.

Blackstone received 234 points in the recent SION voting. The Bears just edged Forrest in the preseason predictions poll.

"What's not to like," said veteran sportswriter Max Mercy. "Look at their pitching and lineup."

Blackstone's pitching rotation consists of Hal Newhouser, Bob Feller, Ray Prim and Ewell Blackwell. The Bears' lineup includes Johnny Pesky, Ted Williams, Stan Musial, Ralph Kiner, Hank Greenberg and Whitey Kurowski.

"They were obviously prepared for putting a team together," said Mercy. "Credit their scouts."

Mercy, however, did point out a Blackstone flaw.

"They are a little too heavy with the left-handed bats," Mercy said. "Perhaps a left-handed staff of pitchers might give them problems."

Forrest also features a heavy dose of left-handed hitters. The Trappers lineup will include Harry Walker, Stan Hack, Tommy Holmes, Phil Cavarratta, Yogi Berra and Mel Ott.

Forrest's starting staff features Roger Wolf, Spud Chandler, Warren Spahn and Johnny Schmitz.

SION chose Cornell to win the National League. The Cardinals' starters include Dick Mauney, Virgil Trucks, Mickey Harris and Dizzy Trout. Cornell's key hitters appear to be Eddie Stanky, Dom DiMaggio, Del Ennis and Joe Gordon.

"Cornell should nose out Odell for the National race," said Mercy.

Odell's rotation is Curt Davis, Al Brazle, Tiny Bonham and Ed Lopat. The Rams' lineup includes Stuffy Stirnweiss, George Kell, Ernie Lombardi and Tommy Henrich.

Below is the predicted finish for the 1946 LCL season:

4. Long Point Pirates
5. St. Paul Saints
6. Cayuga Braves

3. Fairbury Hawks
4. Saunemin Eagles
5. Pontiac Indians
6. Chatsworth Blue Jays
