There shouldn't be games in the pre-season- wait a month til Spring Training, and then you'll see games.
As for pics, under Player and Picture Options in Game Setup, you can set pictures to update 'Always if Needed' (and it sounds like you have that setting on), or to update 'Each Jan 1st'. If you choose the second option, all pics will update at once, on Jan 1st, but not during the year (so a player won't change uniforms after a trade). Not sure if there's a function to force updates of all pics, but if there is, it would be in the League Functions in the Game Setup (from the Game menu).
