Started out career with 3 wins and a loss in 1967. The first win was a 1st round KO over Bill Hardney. That was followed with the loss, a 4 round decision dropped to Johnny Griffin, fighting in his first career bout. After a win over Paul Patin, STaples lost a 10 round decision to Karl Zurheide in February 1968. Knockout wins over Ray Vega(3-21-1,1), Gene Romero and Cassius Clay Scott in 1968 was then followed by another 10 round decision loss in December of that year, this time to Joe Burns.

In 1969 Staples enjoyed three more straigth knockout wins over Art Miller, Benny Lee Bowser and Eddie Parotte. Boxrec then shows Staples fighting very infrequent with one 10 round loss to Ray White in 1970, a 2nd round KO loss to Ron Lyle(Lyle's first career bout), and a 3rd round KO win over Jim Davis(12-8-1,5) in 1971 and then Earnie Shavers knocked out Staples in the 1st round of a fight in September 1972. Boxrec shows one more fight for Staples, a 2nd round KO loss to Larry Alexander in February 1979.

That last fight in 1979 is not factored into this rating for STaples.
