2082 Amateur Draft

Of Denver's 4 picks in this year's amateur draft, there was a definite trend. Firstly, three of the four players are pitchers. Secondly, all three pitchers look like they will induce lots of groundballs.

With the 21st pick in the first round, Denver selected right-handed pitcher Thomas Fons. Fons is 23 years old, and is a workhorse who fields his position well, in addition to his groundball tendencies.

In the second round, the Broncos took a 20 year old right-handed relief pitcher, Howard Johnson. Johnson throws hard, and throws strikes.

In the third round, another starting pitcher was taken. Right-handed Rafael Alvarez is 22 years old, and throws hard.

Denver's last selection was the only hitter that they took. Joel Castillo is a 19 year old right-fielder. He has good speed and covers alot of ground in the outfield. His bat is pretty raw, though. Fortunately, at 19, he has plenty of time to develop.
