Remembering the Hall of Famers: 2B Dave Gonsalves

Dave Gonsalves:

Dave Gonsalves was the first Hall of Fame hitter to get in primarily for his ability to get hits, rather than homeruns, though Gonsalves did have solid pop in his bat. He collected 2936 hits, a total that ranked third all time at the time that he retired. His hit total remained in the top 25 all time until 2063.

Gonsalves also became known for being a "have bat, will travel" type of player. He established himself with Memphis in the league's very first season of 2003. He remained with the Grizzlies until 2008, although an odd series of events in 2006 briefly took him away from Memphis. On July 18th of that year, Memphis traded Gonsalves to Hartford. Twelve days later, the Grizzlies reacquired Gonsalves. A year later, Gonsalves made the first of what would be six All Star appearances. Gonsalves left as a free agent after that year, and went to Portland. In 2010, he was traded to Sacramento, where he got his first opportunity to play in the postseason. Though Sacramento did not win the World Series, it wasn't because of anything Gonsalves didn't do. Gonsalves batted .407 with a double and a homer in the playoffs that season. Gonsalves would spend another year with Portland before coming to Hartford as a free agent. This stint was a bit longer than his first with them. After four years with the Whalers, Gonsalves then came to Los Angeles, where he played three seasons. He finished his career with Rochester.
