Tony Martinez:
If one was to put together a list of the most well-rounded ballplayers in league history, Tony Martinez would be a very good place to start. Martinez rose to prominence in the 20-teens, displaying fearsome HR power, an excellent ability to hit for average, tremendous patience at the plate, the occasional stolen base, and a top notch glove at second base. And he did it all for a consistent winner, Atlanta, who reached the postseason 8 times in his career, winning two World Series.
His power was unquestioned: Three times he belted 50 or more homeruns, and three more times, he hit 40 or more. His ability to get hits was superb: he batted .302 for his career, and topped .300 in a season 10 times. His batting eye was among the best in the league at the time: He led the league in walks 4 times, and OBP, 5 times. Nine times did he draw 100 or more walks in a season. Not an elite base-stealer, he nonetheless managed to top 10 steals in a season seven times. He was an excellent defensive 2B, winning 4 Gold Glove awards in his career.
After two lackluster postseason performances in 2008 and 2009, Martinez helped lead Atlanta to the World Series in 2012, where they lost in 7 games to Pittsburgh. Martinez batted .313 with 4 homeruns. Two years later, however, Atlanta beat Pittsburgh in the World Series, and Martinez blasted 5 homeruns during that postseason run. In 2021, Martinez would deliver 5 postseason extrabase hits en route to another championship victory.
In 2022, Martinez would pass up Timothy Knight to become the all time HR leader. His stay at the top of the list would not last long, however, and he was passed up in 2024 by Cody Newport. Today, Martinez ranks tied for 22nd all time in homeruns, 20th in RBI, and 11th in walks.
