Devin Stalter:
One year after Michael Mathew won the ROTY award, a young 3B for Rochester broke into the big leagues and, though still very raw, won the Rookie of the Year Award himself. His name was Devin Stalter. He quickly turned into a dangerous power threat, posting back to back 40 HR seasons, including a league leading 41 in 2013. Rochester was a good team in those days, but constantly in the shadow of Pittsburgh (In an era when only the division winners reached the postseason, many a good team missed the opportunity for immortality). After six seasons with Rochester, Stalter jumped ship to Los Angeles, a team that, while they tended to be up and down from year to year, had reached the World Series in 2016. He would play three seasons with the Dodgers, and they would make the playoffs each of those seasons, though they never reached the World Series.
In 2020, Stalter left LA and signed with Portland, a perennial bottom feeder who hadn't had a winning season since 2005. It was a match made in heaven. Portland won 97 games and reached the World Series for the first time in franchise history, though they would get swept by Grand Rapids. Portland, led by Stalter, would continue to reach the postseason for each of the next several seasons, though would come up short in the NLCS time and time again. Until 2024. By this point, Stalter was no longer a leading player, but more of a supporting one. Instead, Portland was led by the best pitching in baseball; they had the league's best ERA by more than half a run. Still, it was Stalter who drove in 1 of the 2 runs in Portland's 2-0 victory over Grand Rapids in Game 4 of the World Series to even the series at 2 games apiece. And it was Stalter who drove in the only run in their 1-0 Game 5 victory. After a Game 6 laugher, Portland, and Devin Stalter had their first championship. Portland would reach the playoffs again in 2025, but that marked the end of Portland's run; they wouldn't make the playoffs again until 2037.
