Remembering the Hall of Famers: LF Abdiel Llorent

Abdiel Llorent:

It is not normally easy to replace a Hall of Fame talent at a particular position, but the presence of Abdiel Llorent allowed for a smooth transition in left field for the 2010's era Pittsburgh Pirates. In 2017, long time left fielder Kangorou Yataro was 37 years old and only a shadow of his former greatness. That opened the door for a 22 year old Llorent. Gifted with a powerful, compact swing, and a great batting eye, the young Llorent had demolished AAA pitching the previous season and was ready to make his mark in the big leagues.

His rookie season was solid, if unspectacular, and he was worn down by the time the postseason started. Though Pittsburgh reached, and lost, the World Series, Llorent was horrendous in the playoffs. In 2018, the LF job was completely his, and his numbers improved. Once again, however, Pittsburgh lost the World Series, and Llorent contributed little in the postseason.

The following season was Llorent's breakout year, and his bat carried Pittsburgh to the postseason, where they defeated Memphis in the World Series, though Llorent's postseason was again less than stellar. Llorent rapidly established himself as one of the elite hitters in the game, blasting doubles and homers with dangerous regularity, while displaying tremendous vision at the plate. In 2020, Pittsburgh lost in the NLCS, but Llorent finally had a postseason to be proud of. In 2021, Llorent carried the Pirates to the World Series, but they fell in 7 games to Atlanta, though Llorent's performance was superb. An injury in 2022 prevented Llorent from participating in that year's World Series run, but he returned the following season to win the NL Silver Slugger Award, and the Pirates won another World Series.

Pittsburgh wouldn't win another World Series until late in Llorent's career. By then Llorent was on his way out, and only saw limited action in the 2033 postseason, although he did blast a pair of homeruns. He didn't play at all in the 2034 postseason.

Today, Llorent ranks 12th all time in doubles and tied (with teammate and fellow HoFer, Micheal Bruce) for 22nd in RBI.
