Dropping a hint, perhaps?

Brooklyn, New York

October 27, 1940

Dear Nile,

It was really great to get the postcard from you the other day. It had been a very rough day for me; I had very little sleep the night before because I was sitting up with my Grandma. She was having some difficulty breathing, and I called the doctor about 1:30 A.M. Fortunately, Stockbridge is the kind of town where the family doctor doesn't think twice about grabbing his bag and coming out to visit his patients when they need him. He checked Grandma carefully, gave her some medicine, and told me to call him back if she didn't start breathing more easily very soon. Within a couple of hours, she seemed to be doing much better, and was resting easily.

I didn't wake my Grandpa up, because there was really nothing he could do for her, and he would only worry. After all, Grandpa is 82 years old himself, and while he's still plenty spry, he needs his rest if he's going to stay that way. I have to remind him constantly that I'm here to help him take care of Grandma, because he's always trying to do more than he really should.

I suppose I still miss playing football, but I have found that I really enjoy following the sport as a fan. Sure, I still root for the Lions, but I'm finding myself pulling for Brooklyn a lot more this season--and if it turns out that I have a brother-in-law on the Dodgers, I'll officially switch my allegiance to your team!

Along those lines, I hope you know how thrilled I would be to have you become a full-fledged member of my family. I know I speak for all the O'Farrells when I say that, too. And, I'm not sure you know this, but there seems to be a lucky little connection between St. Nick and Cupid in the O'Farrell family. My mom and dad were married Christmas Eve and my Aunt Emily got married on December 23. Her husband is Smokey Joe Wood, you know. And my sister Beth got engaged on Christmas Eve, too.

Just consider that a little bit of potentially helpful information from a pal, OK?

Good luck with your game this weekend. I'll be looking forward to more news from you soon.

Your pal,
Mike

I decided that since there's no threat of a world war in the O'Farrell universe, Nile Kinnick might enjoy giving NFL football a try. In the "real world," Nile was drafted by the Brooklyn Dodgers in the second round of the NFL draft, but he never played pro football.
