I agree that this year may be the year. This may be the best starting rotation that Denver has ever had. That's the one thing that I think has held them back, especially when they go up against teams like Miami and Tucson, who traditionally have had very good pitching. But Pillsbury has been a horse this year, and Lockridge gives them an excellent number 2. Throw in a bullpen that has been much better than last year, even if it still isn't that great, and I think this is a team that can win some close games. The other thing that will help, I think, is a more comfortable playoff race. Last year was a fight just to get to the playoffs, and this year, they have a solid, if not commanding lead in the division, and might even be able to rest guys down the stretch a little bit.
The downside is the long term future for Denver. The minor league system is, to be blunt, barren. And most of the core group of hitters and pitchers are already in their thirties. Time is running out for this generation of Broncos.
