Seattle resigns reserve RF
Ken Henderson (.303,1 HR,3 RBI) to a 1-year extension worth $97,000.

Mets starter
Tom Seaver (3-4,3.95 ERA) allows just 3 hits in a 9-1 complete game win over the Dodgers. The only run the Dodgers scored was unearned due to an error by 3B
Roy Staiger (3rd error) in the 4th.
Dave Kingman (.239,6 HR,18 RBI) hit a bases loaded triple, a 3-run home run and came within a double of hitting the cycle in accumulating 6 RBI for the day. Mets LF
Steve Henderson (.215,12 RBI) also had 3 hits and scored 2 runs in the winning effort.

The Indians score a run in the top of the 9th off White Sox starter
Ken Kravec (3-5,2.97 ERA) with singles from
Rico Carty (.288),
Bill Melton (.250) and
Larvell Blanks (.300) to win the game 3-2.
Jim Bibby (3-5,5.20 ERA) gives up 4 hits in 8 innings to get the win and
Jim Kern (4.15 ERA) picks up his 7th save. Carty would score all 3 Indians runs.

Errors by 2B
Manny Trillo (3rd), 3B
Dave Rosello (1st) and LF
Greg Gross (3rd) lead to 4 unearned runs in the Cubs 8-5 loss to Montreal.
Ellis Valentine (.256) has 3 hits and
Gary Carter adds 3 RBI and his 7th home run of the year for the Expos. Carter (.233,9 HR,22 RBI) would go on to blast 2 more homers in the double-header nightcap as the Expos swept both games with the Cubs with the 12-2 win.

St. Louis pitchers hold the Braves to 1 hit, a single by Cito Gaston (.211), but lose the game 6-1 when Atlanta scores 5 unearned runs in the 5th inning from 2 errors by 3B Ken Oberkfell (his first 2 of the year), combined with 3 walks from reliever John D'Acquisto (2-1,1 BS,5.19 ERA). For their part, Braves pitchers Eddie Solomon (2-2,4.43 ERA) and Mike Marshall (2.70 ERA) held the Cardinals to just 2 Keith Hernandez (.390) hits the entire game.

This game should have never went to extra innings as we managed to leave 22 men standed on the basepaths throughout the game. Props go to our starter
Mike Haynes, who went 9 2/3 innings and gave up only 5 hits and 2 earned runs. Glendale would score 2 in the 4th, but we would claw our way back with a run in the 5th and 8th to tie it all up at 2. It would stay that way until the 12th when
Tommy Malone showed a little wildness and loaded the bases with 2 walks and then give up the granny to
Floyd Holt to pretty much seal the deal. Hot hitting
Daniel Jones left the game late with a strained rib cage muscle trying to break up a double play and is day-to-day.

Cleveland loses LF
Johnny Grubb (.328,4 HR,24 RBI) for 1-2 weeks after spraining his ankle in a 6-1 win over the Twins. Originally thought to be broken, doctors later diagnosed Grunn with a severe sprain that will take a few weeks to heal.
John Lowenstein will be taking Grubb's place in LF. In the game,
Rod Carew (.367) went 4-for-4 with 2 doubles for the Twins, but little else went Minnesota's way as
Wayne Garland (3-3,4.41 ERA) went the distance while giving up 10 hits and striking out 5.

The Yankees score 7 runs in the top of the 10th to beat Oakland 9-2 - not having an extra-base hit the enitre game. Four of the runs were unearned as 3B
Wayne Gross (his 6th) and C
Jeff Newman (2nd) both committed crucial errors to keep the inning alive and reliever
Dave Giusti (2-3,4.64 ERA) added to the mess by walking 2 batters himself.
Lou Pinella (.234) was a perfect 3-for-3 and reserve 3B
Fernando Gonzalez (.237) delievered 3 hits of his own for the Yankees, giving
Sparky Lyle (2-1,1.74) the win in relief.

The Orioles commit 4 errors in losing to Seattle 8-1, dropping the record of

Ken Singleton (1),
Pat Kelly (1) and
Eddie Murray (3) committed the errors.

Solid starting pitching kept the game close until the offense finally woke up with 4 in the 7th and 2 in the 8th.
Javier "The LF" Garcia (.312),
Eugene Thompson (.252) and
Steven Larsen (.273) all had 3 hits for us, however one of our stars, 3B
Brandon Hayden went down with a strained rotator cuff and looks to be out for 5 weeks, and it feels like we are getting more injuries everyday - down 2 starting pitchers and 2 starting position players at the moment. Thank god for no roster limits. Now if I can just teach my shortstops some new positions...

Even though he is only 2-5 this season, 38-year old
Phil Niekro (5.11 ERA) isn't leaving the Braves for another 2 years after signing an extention worth $774,000 a year - $1,548,000 total.

The Cubs will be without cleanup hitter
Steve Ontiveros for 3-4 weeks after he was plunked in the face with a
Bob Shirley changeup in the 3rd inning in the Cubs 4-2 loss to San Diego. The pitch only left Ontiveros with a deep bruise on his cheekbone and doctors predicted that a pitch any harder would have fractured the bone and put him on the shelf for the rest of the year.
Bill Lee (2-2,4.85 ERA) of the Red Sox holds the Angels to 4 hits and leads Boston to a 2-0 win over California. Angel pitcher
Don Hood (2-5,3.46 ERA) only gives up 3 hits in 7 innings, but 2 were solo home runs by
Carlton Fisk (.295,6 HR,24 RBI) and
George Scott (.266,5 HR,25 RBI).

The Orioles score 1 run in the top of the 11th on a
Kiko Garcia (.238,11 RBI) double off
Dave Pagen brings home Lee May and gives Baltimore an 8-7 win over Seattle.
Ken Singleton (.367,7 HR,22 RBI) is the star for Baltimore, going a perfect 5-for-5, scoring 3 runs, 4 RBI and 2 home runs, his 2nd being a 3-run blast to left field that tied the score and sent the game into extra innings. Baltimore loses starter
Mike Flanagan (4-1,2.49 ERA) after the first inning to a strained back muscle and is listed as day-to-day.
Buddy Bell (.275,5 HR,21 RBI) hits 2 home runs and
Bobby Grich (.216,2 HR,6 RBI) adds another, but Cleveland still falls to the Twins 6-5 when
Lyman Bostock (.285,22 RBI) doubles home
Rod Carew in the bottom off the 12th off
Lary Anderson (1-1,2.61 ERA). Bell's 2-run shot in the top of the 9th, ties the game up at 5 and sends the game into extra innings. Carew collects 3 more hits for Minnesota and is now hitting .376 for the year.
Greg Luzinski (.256,27 RBI) hits his 10th home run of the year in the bottom of the 11th inning off
Stan Wall (0-1,2.25 ERA) to give the Phillies a 7-6 win over the Dodgers. Two innings prior, LA's
John Hale (.100,1 HR,1 RBI) hits a pinch hit home run to tie the game and force the game into extra frames. Together the 2 teams accounted for 7 errors, but it was a
Davy Lopes misplay on a ground ball (his 5th of the year) in the 4th inning that cost the Dodgers 4 unearned runs and a possible victory.
Gary Carter (.248,25 RBI) hits two more home runs in a 6-4 victory over the Braves and has hit 5 home runs in the last two days. Carter hit three out of the park in yesterdays double-header against the Cubs and now leads the major leagues with 11.
Pepe Frias (.237) also adds 3 hits for the Expos in the win.
Roy White (.397,3 HR,7 RBI) hits 2 of the Yankees 4 home runs in a 7-3 win over Oakland. White goes 4-for-4 and knocks in 3 RBI while scoring twice.
Mickey Rivers (.374,11 RBI) has 3 hits, including his 2nd home run of the year and
Don Gullett (4-3,2.65 ERA) goes 8 strong shutout innings giving up just 4 hits while striking out 7.

Our offense couldn't get anything going against O'Higgins (2-1,2.09 ERA) as he is one of the toughest pitchers we have faced this year. We did manage 5 walks to go along with the 4 hits but baserunning mistakes hurt us as
Eugene Thompson was picked off of second and
Danny Mac was thrown out stealing 2nd - both killing potential scoring opportunities.
Derek Todd (3-4,4.05 ERA) had trouble giving up the long ball today, and each time he did, the were runners on - making the damage that much worse.

Texas resigned reliever
Adrian Devine (1 SV,1.17 ERA) to a 2-year extension worth $128,575 total mainly because they felt bad he had a name like that. Details are: $68,000 next season and $60,575 in 1979. He's making $415,239 this season - hell of a pay cut if you ask me.
Oscar Gamble (.274,7 HR,17 RBI) leads off the bottom of the 13th with a towering shot off
Marty Pattin (0-2,7.94 ERA) to give the White Sox a 4-3 win over the Royals.
Ken Brett (1.90 ERA) goes 11 innings, giving up 10 hits, and 3 earned runs and
John Kucek (1-1,4.85 ERA) gets the win with 2 scorless innings of relief. Ken's brother
George Brett (.315) had 3 hits for the Royals including a triple off of his brother, but it was the combination of Gamble,
Chet Lemon (.271), who had 3 doubles and
Alan Bannister (.343), who had 3 hits for the Sox, that helped lead Chicago to victory.

Forget what I said about O'Higgins being one of the toughest pitchers we have seen,
Sergio Meran (5-1,1.74 ERA) is THE toughest pitcher we have faced or probably will face this year. Our vaunted hitting has tailed off in the last 4-5 days and our starters are getting tired due to the injuries and no help from the Phillies organization. Hello? We could use another arm down here!
Mike Haynes pitched well, but errors by
Ben Ball,
Brandon Wade and
John Hicks cost us a total of 4 unearned runs and a potential pitching duel. For the record,
Javier Garcia (.268) broke up the no-hitter in the 6th with a single and the home run by
John Kennedy (.234,1 HR,22 RBI) were the only hits we could muster.
