CLIFFORD 'SCOT' CAMPBELL

Not a great year for the Scot, as he hit just .243 and the question must be asked: at 35 is Campbell on the fade?

JOHN MAHONEY

Mahoney had a down year - which was epidemic for the Boston club in a season which can not be considered anything other than a disappointment, but he still managed to score 140 runs as he walked an astounding 164 times.

FRANK MCGRATH

McGrath continues to shine and is now considered to be among the best - if not THE best - outfielders in the game. Defensively superb, he also continues to produce at the bat, recording a .312 average, below his career mark of .335, but strong in a down year for hitters.

SOLOMON CUFFEY

Cuffey signed on to play in the ill-fated Western League and though the league folded in June, Cuffey had put together a solid couple of months, finishing with a .354 batting mark and returning to his regular position behind the plate. Where he'll land in 1886 remains to be seen.

WILLIAM HILL

Along with his St. Louis Maroons team mates, Hill moved into the National League (in his case it was BACK into the League) and though he didn't match the .372 he posted in both 1883 and '84, he did hit .303 for a surprisingly strong Maroon club.

HARRIS WENDELL

There's no easy way to say this - Harris Wendell is on his way out of the game. After seeing his development stall, the once-promising youngster found himself unable to break into the regular lineup for the Southern League's Macon Club after being unable to find a job in either the League or Association when the Cleveland Blues folded after the '84 season. It's unlikely Wendell will play in 1886, though he may give it another go.

PHINNEAS HARVEY

Harvey's star gained in brilliance in 1885. Despite a somewhat shady transfer from the New York Metropolitans to the National League's Gothams, Harvey's performance did not suffer in the least. He hit .339 and record 16 doubles and 12 triples and was a big reason the Gothams won the National League pennant.
