July 9, 1876 - Sunday Base Ball Report
Hartford Dark Blues 21-9
Philadelphia Athletics 20-12
Chicago White Stockings 20-13
New York Mutuals 19-11
Boston Red Caps 13-20
Louisville Grays 12-20
Cincinnati Reds 11-21
St. Louis Brown Stockings 11-21
Hartford and Chicago just finished a tough three-game series in the Windy City, in which the White Stockings took two of three. However, there were some very exciting games, including a Fourth of July game in which Chicago scored a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game at 3, then won it 4-3 in the bottom of the thirteenth. In another game of the series, Hartford scored a run in the top of the ninth to break a scoreless tie and get their only win of the series, 1-0.
Overall, as we approach the halfway mark of the season, it is increasingly apparent that this four-team race may continue for some time.
