HITTERS BY POSITION - RIGHT FIELD
(asterisked players will be free agents this offseason)
George Bechtel, Philadelphia Athletics* (0-44-.249-9) - His career has been trending downward for several years now. Look for him to have to fight for playing time with a new team.
Jack Chapman, Cincinnati Reds (1-19-.274-2) - He did surprisingly well this season, especially considered he'd never even hit .200 before this year. He's a great fielder as well, but at age 33 he's not the future of this franchise.
Jim Devlin, Chicago White Stockings (0-35-.327-4) - He split time between right field and first base, but wherever he played he had by far his best season at the plate.
John Glenn, Boston Red Caps* (2-27-.268-3) - He was an adequate right fielder this season, but Boston has announced they will not be offering him a contract for 1877. At age 26, he will probably do all right for himself in the free agent market.
Dick Higham, New York Mutuals* (0-19-.361-1) - New York tried four different players at right field this year, and he was by far the most effective. Can also play catcher adequately.
Bill Kelly, Louisville Grays (1-24-.260-0) - A major injury cut his season short, but he still did an adequate job for the Grays. Look for him to be a bench player in 1877 if Louisville can sign a replacement for him.
Tim Murnane, St. Louis Brown Stockings (0-12-.188-2) - Wow. Hard to believe he was a perennial .300 hitter just a couple years ago. They will be frantically looking to replace him this offseason.
Orator Shaffer, Hartford Dark Blues (0-68-.339-0) - A breakout year for the young Hartford slugger.
And the award for best right fielder of 1876 goes to... ORATOR SHAFFER OF THE HARTFORD DARK BLUES. This was pretty much a no-brainer, as Shaffer was better than Devlin and had far more playing time than Higham.
