I viewed the creation of Shumway as a real personal challenge. Mike Silver was kind enough to talk with Tiger Ted Lowery, on my behalf, about Shumway and share Lowery's recollections with me. Creating Sam was a challenge because he had to be good enough to notch a win vs. Tiger Ted in a series of bouts and bad enough to loose to Coley Welch (rated as a MW in mt db) and also loose to an over the hill Unknown Winston. Lots of playtesting and tinkering off and on over the span of several years. I look at Shumway as my graduation exercise in fighter creation.

Sam will get more opportunities following the conclusion of the tournament. I'm almost sorry that my namesake beat him.
Sam may have been your graduation exercise for fighter creation, but I'm still barely into grade school. The stiffs that I received from you, as well as many of the others that ended in my database, will help me to become more accurate when I start to try to rate the many I've been stockpiling in my word document! This tournament has been fun and of value to me!
