Round 1 is Done
The fights to determine the 3 remaining boxers who'll continue in the tournament have been completed.
Pedro Agosto captured one of the slots by KOing Cliff Purnell in the 2nd round and then easily outpointing Tony Doyle. With the exception of the first round with Foyle, he easily dominated both fights. he knocked Purnell down in the 2nd round before knocking him out, and decked Doyle in Round 7 of a 78-73 unanimous decision. If there is such a thing as a star among the level 1 fighters, he is in the running for it after these impressive win!
In the next bracket, Cliff Couser won a 75-76, 76-75, 76-75 split decision over Sedrick Fields. Fields got a 7 count KD in Round 4, but a strong rounds 6-8 for Couser made the difference. Couser then fought Derrick Banks for a 2nd and even a 3rd time, as the two reprised their earlier draw, forcing a rematch. Banks opened a huge cut on Cliff in the last round, but Cliff escaped with a majority draw. Couser received a 6 round technical decision in the last fight, as he was cut in Round 4 from an accidental head butt, which was reopened in Round 7, resulting in the stoppage. he was ahead by at least a round on each of the judge's cards through Round 6, but Banks was incensed, as he had pounded Couser all over the ring in Round 7, outscoring him 16 to 0, when the fight was stopped just before the round became official! So Couser advances and Banks wants a rematch!
In the last bracket, Danny Wofford, he of the lifeline, fought two spirited contests in a bid to advance. He drew with Soldier Kearns in a fight that I thought he won 77-76. He did almost nothing in the last 2 rounds, or he would have won easily. In the rematch, his valiant bid ended. Cut in the first round, he fought well until it was reopened at the end of Round 4. Then Soldier started landing some heavy shots, knocking Danny down in the seventh round. Danny tried to arise at the 9 count. His spirit was willing, but his flesh was weak, and he was counted out ! Dejected but undaunted, he headed back to the buffet, determined to add a few more pounds of muscle to his finely-chiseled frame!
Almost as an afterthought, Soldier landed heavy shots early and late to capture a 77-75, 76-76, 77-75 majority decision over Dan Daily, and will advance. I had it 79-74 with two good rallies for Soldier at the end of rounds 7 and 8.
The pairings for Round 2 will be coming shortly!
