August 5, 1877 - Sunday Base Ball Report

Chicago White Stockings 23-11
Louisville Grays 21-14
Hartford Dark Blues 19-16
Boston Red Caps 17-18
St. Louis Brown Stockings 12-23
Cincinnati Reds 10-20

And just like that, the race is on. Another bad week from Chicago, a solid winning streak by Louisville, and finally a dramatic win on August 4, where Louisville defeated Chicago 3-2 by virtue of possibly the greatest pitching performance base ball has ever seen. Harry Arundel of Louisville got 12 Chicago batters out on strikes, by far the highest total in base ball history. Although Chicago cranks complained that Arundel was flicking his wrist to deliver the ball in unpermitted fashion, the game stands and the spectators in Louisville thrilled to the sight of this new style of pitching. Could it be that this is the boost the National League needs to survive?
