September 2, 1877 - Sunday Base Ball Report
Louisville Grays 28-19
Chicago White Stockings 27-16
Hartford Dark Blues 24-22
Boston Red Caps 22-26
St. Louis Brown Stockings 19-25
Cincinnati Reds 16-28
And just like that, heading into the stretch we've got a new leader. Recently, all sorts of unsavory rumors have begun to circulate around the Chicago club. There are several notorious gamblers who are often around the base ball grounds, and some are suggesting a deal has been struck to ensure Louisville wins the pennant.
Although President William Hulbert is silent about this, sources close to the club say that there will be big changes in Chicago if the team fails to win the championship. "Now that we actually have an exciting race," said one National League mogul, "we need to make sure the games are being played cleanly and fairly."
