Wednesday, September 26, 1877 - Louisville 7, Chicago 6
It was a come-from-behind victory in the bottom of the ninth for Louisville, who trailed the entire game up to that point. Chicago outhit Louisville and generally played the better game, but third baseman Levi Meyerle committed four errors in the field, three of which were extremely costly. In the bottom of the second inning, with Chicago ahead 4-0, he committed two errors which directly led to three Louisville runs scoring.
Then, in the bottom of the ninth, with Chicago ahead 6-5, a runner on first and one out, Ross Barnes hit a ground ball right to Meyerle. It rolled between his legs, and when the dust settled, Barnes was on second and lead runner Fred Treacey was on third. Back-to-back singles by Andy Leonard and Art Allison settled things, and moved Louisville to within a game of first place in the National League.
Standings:
Chicago 33-20
Louisville 32-21
